Founded in 1849 during the settlement of the region by migrants from Antioquia, Manizales grew around mountain routes and coffee farming. Trade and the former cableway to Mariquita connected its hillsides with other regions.
Its centre preserves buildings erected after the fires of the early twentieth century. The cathedral, cultural institutions and university life are part of a city shaped by steep slopes and Andean forests.
